Seashell Adventure
On this adventure, you’ll explore the South end of Garden City Beach. The South End is best explored at low tide, and you’ll want to make sure to get there early, as parking is extremely limited.
Pass the UFO House
People refer to this house as “The UFO House,” “The Spaceship House,” “The Jetson’s House,” or “The Flying Saucer House.” Believe it or not, it was built in 1976. It has 1800 square feet, four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a beautiful view of Murrells Inlet.
Miami architect Peter Vander Klout designed this home. It was an attempt to design a " Hurricane-Proof” home that could withstand winds as high as 300 mph.
It is not the only one built. Several of these homes were built in South Florida around Miami and the Keys in the mid-70s. One design near Homestead, Florida, withstood the brunt of Hurricane Andrew, a Category 5 hurricane with sustained wind speeds as high as 165 mph.
You may be looking at one of the last of these homes, as most of the homes built in South Florida have been abandoned or demolished.
Qwaygo Insider Tips: This is a private residence. You may park at Gulf Stream Cafe, which is only a short walk away. Gulf Stream Cafe is also a great place to eat and one of the best spots to see the sunset.

Arriving at Shell Beach
Although this beach isn’t officially named Shell Beach, it’s one of the most incredible places to find shells and sea glass. You’ll want to get here early as parking is minimal. Hopefully, you have checked the tides, as it is best at low tide. There is very little beach to explore at high tide. Whereas low tide will allow you to walk on some of the area’s best shell beaches.

Find the Public Walkway
Hopefully, you’ve found parking. Now, walk further south to find the nearest public walkway. Once at the beach, and if you’ve come at low tide, you’ll be able to explore further down the peninsula. Caution: if you walk too far and the tide rises, there will be no beach to walk on. Since the far south end is a gated community, you are not allowed to walk on the roadway here. Explore, but be aware of the tide at all times. The far south end has rocks and a beautiful, secluded beach.
